Cape Town tidal pools and sea swims, Atlantic and False Bay

Tidal pools and sea swims on both Cape Town coasts, from Saunders Rock to St James, with water temperatures, surf spots and seaside saunas.

The best tidal pools in Cape Town are Saunders Rock, Camps Bay and Maiden's Cove on the Atlantic side, and St James, Dalebrook and Wooley's Pool on False Bay. The Atlantic is cold, usually about 12 to 16°C, while Muizenberg often reaches about 20°C in summer. For lengths in a pool, Sea Point Pavilion is a saltwater City pool. Finish with a sauna at SaunaHaüs in Mouille Point or a mobile sauna at the pools.

Amaya is designed in Sea Point, so Saunders Rock is our nearest swim. We say what we love; we are not affiliated with any of these places. Check hours before you go.

How cold is the water

These are rough guides, not a forecast.

  • Atlantic Seaboard (Clifton, Camps Bay): usually about 12 to 16°C. In summer (October to April), south-easterly winds cause upwelling that can push it sometimes below 10°C. Camps Bay is usually about 13°C and can drop to 9°C.
  • False Bay (Muizenberg, St James): warmer. Muizenberg often reaches about 20°C in summer. Over the year, False Bay averages around 17°C or more, the Atlantic around 13°C or less.

So: the Atlantic for a short, bracing dip, False Bay for a proper swim.

Atlantic tidal pools

Saunders Rock, Sea Point

Saunders Rock is on Beach Road at the Bantry Bay end of the Sea Point Promenade. It is a small pool, partly enclosed by boulders. It is popular for after-work and sunset swims. Mobile saunas from Hot Huts and Go Sauna set up here.

Camps Bay tidal pool

The pool is at the southern end of Camps Bay Beach, off Victoria Road. You swim with the Twelve Apostles behind you. The Waterblommetjies swim group meets here, and Hot Huts and Go Sauna bring saunas.

Maiden's Cove

Maiden's Cove is on Victoria Road, between Glen Beach and Clifton 4th. There are two pools, plus braai and picnic areas. Bring lunch and stay the afternoon.

Sea Point Pavilion

Not tidal, but the easiest swim on the Atlantic side. The City pool on Lower Beach Road is salt water, with an Olympic 50 m pool, a diving pool, a fun pool and a kiddies' pool. It opens 07:00 to 19:00 Tuesday to Sunday and 12:00 to 19:00 on Monday. Adults pay R39.

False Bay tidal pools

St James

St James tidal pool is off Main Road, next to the coloured bathing boxes. It is sheltered and popular for sunrise swims. Hot Huts runs a sauna here.

Dalebrook

Dalebrook is between St James and Kalk Bay, off Main Road between the railway line and the sea. The water is slightly warmer and mostly out of the wind. Hot Huts has a sauna on site, so this is the pool for a sauna and swim session.

Wooley's Pool

Wooley's Pool is off Main Road between Kalk Bay and Clovelly. It has a children's splash pool and a separate adult area. Good for families.

Further south

Glencairn, Soetwater in Kommetjie, Miller's Point and Buffels Bay also have tidal pools. Buffels Bay is inside Cape Point, so the Cape Point entry fee applies. Check before you go.

Swim with a group

Sea swimming is safer with others. Two groups meet on Sundays at 09:00:

  • Sunday Hot Chocolate Swimming Group: Camps Bay Beach, meeting on the lawns in front of Café Caprice, year-round. About 1.5 km close to shore.
  • ATB "Around the Buoy": Long Beach, Simon's Town.

Save the NSRI number before you swim: 082 911.

Surf: where to learn

  • Muizenberg, Surfer's Corner: the beginner beach break, gentle and best in summer. The beachfront is under construction until December 2026. The surf stays open, but parts of the beach are fenced off and the beach huts are gone. Gary's Surf School at 34 Balmoral Building, Beach Road, runs a 2-hour group lesson for about R800, board and wetsuit included.
  • Long Beach, Kommetjie: for intermediates. An A-frame on a sandbank, best at mid-tide. It works in a south or south-westerly wind when Muizenberg is blown out. Crowded at weekends.
  • Big Bay, Bloubergstrand: learners and up, less crowded, best at low to mid tide.
  • Llandudno: intermediate to experienced only, cold water, busy at weekends.

Saunas by the sea

  • SaunaHaüs, Prom Park, 160 Beach Road, Mouille Point. Billed as Cape Town's first dedicated sauna and cold-plunge club. The sauna runs at 75 to 95°C, the plunge at 6 to 10°C. Sessions are 60 minutes; a single session is R300 on its own site. Book at book.saunahaus.club.
  • Hot Huts at Dalebrook, St James, Camps Bay, Saunders Rock and Long Beach in Simon's Town. R100 walk-in for 15 minutes. Its Muizenberg sauna is closed during the beachfront works.
  • Go Sauna at Camps Bay tidal pool, Saunders Rock and Kleinbaai in Blouberg. R100 for 15 minutes, R220 for 1 hour.
  • ShuShu Sauna rotates between Kommetjie, Hout Bay, Simon's Town, Saunders Rock, Fish Hoek, Glencairn, Camps Bay and Witsands. R150 for 30 minutes.

Which one for what

  • Sunset dip after work: Saunders Rock.
  • Long swim in warmer water: St James or Dalebrook.
  • Sauna and swim: Dalebrook, or SaunaHaüs plus the Promenade.
  • Kids: Wooley's Pool or the Sea Point Pavilion.
  • A whole afternoon: Maiden's Cove, with a picnic.
  • First surf lesson: Surfer's Corner, Muizenberg.

What to wear

Swim in a swimsuit. Amaya does not make swimwear.

For the walk to the pool and the coffee after, you want something you can pull over damp skin. The Amalfi Dress (R1 850) is linen, made for the beach. The Jaipur Dress (R1 850) is a one-size printed maxi that packs flat in a beach bag. On a windy False Bay morning, the Nusa Top (R1 199) with Shio Pants (R1 800) keeps you covered.

Climbing first? Pair a swim with a morning on the mountain from our Cape Town hikes guide. For more Sea Point mornings, read the Atlantic Seaboard movement guide. Choosing a beach rather than a pool? See Cape Town beaches: which one for what.
