For a free sunset in Cape Town, go to Signal Hill, Llandudno, Bakoven, Camps Bay beach or the Sea Point Promenade, or hike Lion's Head on a full moon. For a drink with the view, book Chinchilla or Baptiste in Camps Bay, or Tobago's or Grand Africa Café & Beach in Granger Bay. From mid-December to mid-January the sun sets close to 20:00, so arrive by 19:00.

Amaya is designed in Sea Point, so the Atlantic sunset is on our doorstep, and we design for the evenings that follow it. We say what we love; we are not affiliated with any of these places. Check hours before you go.

Free sunset spots

Signal Hill

Signal Hill looks over the ocean, Table Mountain and the City Bowl. The Signal Hill precinct was closed for a time after the May 2026 storm, so check it is open. It is also home to the Noon Gun, which has fired at midday since 1806. If you would rather not drive, the City Sightseeing Sunset Bus runs from Stop 1 at the V&A Waterfront with Signal Hill as its only stop. It leaves at around 17:30 in October and around 18:00 from November to February, and does not run from 22 December to 6 January. Allow about 3 hours. Bring a picnic, a blanket and a warm layer.

Lion's Head on a full moon

SANParks closed the Lion's Head summit for a time after the May 2026 storm, so check sanparks.org for the current status first. The hike up takes about an hour. The upper section has chains, steel ladders and footholds. The summit gets crowded at sunset on full moon nights, and you come down in the dark. SANParks issued a safety advisory in May 2025 after night incidents: go in a group, tell someone your route, charge your phone and bring a headlamp. The next full moons fall around 24 November and 24 December 2026, then 22 January, 20 February and 22 March 2027. Check a moon calendar before you plan. Start points and distances are in our Cape Town hikes guide.

Llandudno

Llandudno is a Blue Flag beach popular for picnics and sundowners. There are no shops or bars, so bring everything with you. Parking is tight and the walk down is steep. Arrive early on weekends.

Bakoven

Bakoven sits just south of Camps Bay. It is a quieter alternative to Camps Bay and Clifton, with the Twelve Apostles behind you as the sun drops. Good for a weeknight when you want space.

Camps Bay beach

Camps Bay is a Blue Flag beach with bars and cafés along Victoria Road. Sit on the sand for free, then walk across the road for a drink. The water is cold and the shore break is strong, so this is a sitting beach at sunset.

Sea Point Promenade

The promenade runs along the Atlantic, so you face the sunset from almost any bench. Grand Pavilion, at 277 Beach Road, sits right on it if you want to move from the bench to a table.

Sundowners with a view

Chinchilla, Camps Bay

Chinchilla is a rooftop on the second floor of The Promenade, Victoria Road, over the Camps Bay strip. Expect cocktails, wine and whisky, sushi and seafood platters, with DJs at sunset. Book on Dineplan, especially for Friday and Saturday evenings.

Baptiste, Camps Bay

Baptiste is on the rooftop of The Marly, on The Promenade, Victoria Road. The menu is sushi, seafood and signature cocktails. Booking is essential, with an R400 deposit.

Café Caprice, Camps Bay

Café Caprice, at 37 Victoria Road, has served sundowners since 2001. DJs play deep house and lounge on weekend nights. Sunday sundowners draw a dressed-up crowd. Check hours before you go.

Tobago's, Granger Bay

Tobago's is the terrace bar at the Radisson Collection Hotel, 100 Beach Road, Granger Bay. It faces the sea and is known for sunsets. Order seafood, pizza or a cocktail. It is open all day.

Grand Africa Café & Beach, Granger Bay

Grand Africa Café & Beach is off Beach Road, Granger Bay. It is a restored boathouse with its own private beach and views of the Atlantic and Robben Island. It has five bars and is open daily from 11:00 to 24:00. Park at Granger Bay Parking.

The Silo Rooftop, V&A Waterfront

The rooftop of The Silo Hotel serves cocktails, fine wine and small plates from noon. Non-guests are welcome, but the pool is for hotel guests only. Booking is essential and needs a deposit, with no minimum spend.

After sunset: Sea Point rooftops

For a drink close to home once the light has gone, Sea Point has three rooftops. Hugo Social Club is on the 9th floor of the Latitude Aparthotel, 2 Kings Road: order the Saigon Sunset or a frozen espresso martini. The Nines is on the 9th floor of Station House, 19 Kloof Road, for a French 75 and Mediterranean plates. Skye, on the 7th floor of The Hyde Hotel, 13 London Road, has a retractable roof and Lion's Head views.

Which one for what

  • Free and easy: Sea Point Promenade, then a drink at Grand Pavilion.
  • The classic view: Signal Hill, with a picnic.
  • Adventure: Lion's Head on a full moon, in a group, with a headlamp.
  • Quiet: Bakoven on a weeknight.
  • Bring your own: Llandudno, with everything packed.
  • A night out: Chinchilla or Café Caprice in Camps Bay.
  • Feet in the sand with a drink: Grand Africa Café & Beach.

Sundowners start warm and end cool, so dress for both. The Pacha Cowl Dress (R1 650) is a knit mini with a cowl neck and halter, warm enough for a rooftop once the sun goes. The Infinity Mini Dress (R2 200) is multiway, so one dress works for Signal Hill and a Camps Bay bar the same week. For a beach sunset, the Lola Dress (R1 950) is printed, with a halter. Leave heels at home for Lion's Head and Llandudno. If you are making a full day of it, our Sea Point to Camps Bay day covers the hours before sunset.

Delivery and exchanges

Amaya delivers across South Africa for R99, free over R1 500. Cape Town takes 1 to 2 working days, Johannesburg and Pretoria 2 to 3, the rest of South Africa 3 to 5. Collect in Sea Point for free. The first exchange is free within 14 days.
