For a Cape Town wedding, wear a midi or maxi in a fabric that moves and does not crease, choose a block heel or a flat for grass and sand, and bring a layer, because the temperature drops after sunset even in December. The venue decides the rest: winelands gardens want colour and length, beaches want light fabric and no stilettos, rooftops want structure, farm markets want relaxed, and winter black tie wants satin and a real coat.

Amaya makes wedding-guest dresses in Sea Point, so this guide is built from what customers tell us afterwards: the dresses that danced until 01:00 and the ones that fought the wind all afternoon. Styles are linked where they are on the site now. Older styles are named so you can ask about them on WhatsApp.

5 rules for every Cape Town wedding

  1. Check the start time against the sun. Sunset is around 19:55 in late December and around 18:58 in mid October. The ceremony is warm. The speeches are not.
  2. Respect the south-easter. In December and January the wind picks up in the afternoon. A floaty maxi with a thigh slit becomes a sail at 16:00.
  3. Pick the shoe for the ground, not the dress. Lawn, gravel, sand and decking each want something different. Details per venue below.
  4. Choose the fabric for the hour. Linen and cotton for daytime. Crease-free knit for the drive. Satin and lace after dark and indoors.
  5. Never wear white, cream or ivory. Amaya's Portofino Dress is cream satin and R1 950. Do not wear it to someone else's wedding unless the bride has asked you to.

Winelands garden wedding: Babylonstoren and Boschendal

The dress code is usually "smart", "garden formal" or "cocktail". The ground is lawn, gravel and the odd vineyard row for photos. Babylonstoren in Simondium is a garden farm, and Boschendal in Franschhoek has the same mix of lawn and gravel, so expect to walk between the ceremony, the drinks and the dinner.

Shoes: a block heel of 5 cm or under, a wedge or a flat sandal. Stilettos sink into lawn and twist on gravel.

Weather: the winelands are inland, so days are usually warmer than the coast. The evening still cools once the sun is down. Bring a wrap or a knit for the speeches and the dance floor.

Fabric and colour: this is the venue for print and colour. Greenery is the backdrop and a printed maxi photographs well against it. Linen is right for a 15:00 ceremony. If you are driving 1 hour from Cape Town, a crease-free knit arrives looking pressed.

Amaya styles for a winelands garden wedding:

  • The Camilla Dress, printed, R2 190. The print hides grass and wine.
  • The Jaipur Dress, a one-size printed maxi at R1 850. Ask Max about availability.
  • The Madison Dress, a maxi at R2 200. Length for a long ceremony and a late night.

Beach wedding: Clifton, Camps Bay and Llandudno

The dress code is usually "beach formal" or "barefoot elegant". Both mean the same thing: look dressed, lose the heels.

Shoes: flat sandals you can take off and carry. Sand defeats every heel ever made.

Wind: Camps Bay beach takes the south-easter head on in the afternoon. Clifton's coves are more sheltered. Llandudno has its own weather. A dress with weight in the hem and no slit behaves. Light chiffon does not.

Sun: UV in Cape Town summer is very high. A 16:00 beach ceremony is still full sun. Wear a hat you can take off for photos and SPF 50 under the dress.

Cold: by the time the sun goes down, around 19:55 in late December, the beach is cold and the wind is still up. Plan to be inside or under cover by then, with a layer.

Fabric and length: linen and cotton in a mini or a midi. Sand and a maxi hem are a bad pairing. Linen with some body behaves in a breeze. Chiffon does not.

Amaya styles for a beach wedding:

  • The Aura Dress, a mini linen dress at R1 800. Linen reads right on sand and dries if the spray reaches you.
  • The Amalfi Dress, R1 850. Ask Max about colours.
  • The Madison Mini, R1 250. The shorter cut of the Madison for a barefoot ceremony.

City rooftop wedding

City Bowl and Foreshore rooftops want "cocktail". The ground is decking, tile or concrete, so this is the 1 Cape Town venue where heels are fine.

Wind: a rooftop is exposed. Structure wins. A fitted midi, a knit set or a dress with a defined waist stays put. A maxi with a slit flies.

Cold: rooftops cool faster than gardens. By 21:00 in December you want a jacket, not a scarf. In October, earlier.

Fabric and colour: this is where satin, lace and deep colour belong. Chocolate, black, peach lace and jewel tones photograph well against city lights.

Amaya styles for a city rooftop wedding:

  • The Byblos Knit Skirt and Top Set, R1 790. A set gives structure in wind and does not crease in a taxi.
  • The Bianca Dress, black or peach lace, R2 200. Lace for a 19:00 ceremony.
  • The Nassau Dress, chocolate, R2 495. Chocolate for an evening venue.

Sunset market or farm wedding: Cape Point Vineyards and Noordhoek

Some couples marry where they go on a Thursday. Cape Point Vineyards in Noordhoek runs a Thursday sunset market from October to April, and farm weddings on the peninsula borrow the same mood: blankets, long tables, a view and no dress code stricter than "smart casual".

Ground: grass and gravel, sometimes a slope. Flats or a low block heel.

Wind: Noordhoek is on the Atlantic side. Expect an afternoon breeze and plan the hem for it.

Cold: a sunset market wedding ends after sunset by definition. Around 19:55 in late December, around 18:58 in mid October. Bring a knit.

Fabric: cotton and linen, in print or colour. This is the venue where a short set is acceptable if the invitation says casual.

Amaya styles for a farm or sunset market wedding:

  • The Camilla Dress, printed, R2 190. Relaxed enough for a blanket, dressed enough for the photos.
  • The Pacha Cowl Dress, R1 650. Ask Max about availability.
  • The Chasing the Sun Short Set, R1 790. Only when the invitation says casual.

Winter black tie: June to August

Cape Town winter weddings move indoors: hotel ballrooms, wine estate halls, the odd heritage building. The dress code says "black tie" or "formal" and means it.

Weather: it rains, it blows and it is cold after dark. A pashmina is not a coat. Wear a real coat to the car and check it at the door.

Shoes: heels are fine indoors. Carry a flat for the walk from the car park in the rain.

Fabric and length: satin, lace and heavier knits, full length or a formal midi. Dark colour. This is the 1 Cape Town wedding where you can overdress and be right.

Amaya styles for winter black tie:

  • The Nassau Dress, chocolate, R2 495. Ask Max about fabric and length.
  • The Bianca Dress in black lace, R2 200.
  • The Leela Dress, animal print, R2 399, if the invitation says "cocktail" rather than "black tie".

What goes over the dress

Amaya makes dresses, a few sets, tops and pants, not coats. So the honest advice is: bring your own layer and choose it before the dress. A cropped knit works over a mini. A long tailored jacket works over a maxi. A wrap works nowhere once the south-easter is up.

Amaya runs S to L, with some one-size styles. Check the size guide before you order. Pieces leave the Cape Town studio in 1 to 2 working days. Delivery is R99 in South Africa and free over R1 500: 1 to 2 days to Cape Town, 2 to 3 days to Johannesburg. The first exchange is free within 14 days. If you may need to swap a size, order 10 working days before the wedding so the exchange has time to travel. For a question about a specific wedding, WhatsApp Max on +27 83 703 8502 with the venue and the date.

Shop the wedding-guest and evening collections, or see Amaya in person at The Lot Collective, 77 Regent Road, Sea Point and 15 Vineyard Road, Claremont.
