Pack for 26 to 27°C days, a strong afternoon wind and evenings that cool fast: 2 dresses that go from beach to dinner, 1 linen or cotton set, 1 knit that does not crease, 1 dress for the night out, a windproof layer, a hat that stays on, flat sandals and 1 pair of trainers, 2 swimsuits, SPF 50 and 1 pair of pants. Leave the stilettos, the chiffon maxi and the second suitcase at home.

Amaya is designed in Sea Point and made in Cape Town, so this list is written from the inside of a Cape Town summer, not a hotel brochure. The 10 items below fit 1 cabin bag. Amaya pieces are linked where they are on the site now.

The weather, in numbers

December and January in Cape Town average highs of around 26 to 27°C. The south-easter, which locals call the Cape Doctor, blows in most afternoons and can be strong. Evenings are cool, especially on the Atlantic side. UV is very high. Sunset is around 19:55 in late December. Rain is rare in these 2 months.

That adds up to the local phrase "four seasons in a day": a still, warm morning, a hot midday, a windy afternoon and a cool evening. Your clothes have to do all 4 without a second trip to the hotel.

The south-easter, explained for your wardrobe

The Cape Doctor is a dry wind. It clears the air, which is why the city loves it, and it tests clothes, which is why Amaya designs for it. It lifts a light hem, takes an untied hat, fills a loose maxi and sandblasts a beach. Camps Bay beach takes it head on. Clifton's coves are more sheltered. The Sea Point Promenade gets it in the late afternoon. The rule for fabric is weight: linen and cotton with some body, or a knit, sit still. Chiffon and thin viscose do not. The rule for shape is a defined waist or a shorter length. The rule for accessories is that everything has to tie, clip or fit.

1. Two dresses that go from beach to dinner

The core of the bag. A dress you can pull over a swimsuit at 15:00 at Clifton 4th, shake out, and wear to a 20:00 table in Camps Bay. Linen or cotton, mini or midi, no slit.

  • The Aura Dress, mini linen, R1 800. Amaya's beach-to-dinner dress.
  • The Madison Mini, R1 250. Ask Max about availability.

2. One linen or cotton set

A set gives you 2 pieces that work alone and together. Top with pants for the wind. Shorts with a swimsuit for the beach. Both for brunch.

3. One knit that does not crease

The piece you pack last and wear first. Amaya's bijou knit comes out of a suitcase looking pressed, holds its shape in wind and works at 09:00 and 21:00.

4. One dress for the night out or the wedding

December is wedding season in Cape Town, so there is a reasonable chance you will need 1 proper dress. Print or colour. Length. A fabric that survives the car.

  • The Camilla Dress, printed, R2 190.
  • The Jaipur Dress, one-size printed maxi, R1 850. One size means no exchange worry.
  • See the wedding-guest collection for what is in stock.

5. A layer for the south-easter

Amaya makes dresses, sets, tops and pants, not jackets, so this is the 1 item on the list you bring from home. Pick 1 light jacket or 1 knit that closes at the front. A wrap flies. From around 20:00 you will want it every evening, and on a windy afternoon on the Promenade you will want it at 16:00.

6. A hat that stays on, and sunglasses

UV is very high in a Cape Town summer. A hat is not a style choice, it is sunscreen. Choose 1 with a tie or a snug fit, or a cap. A wide floppy hat lasts 10 minutes in the Cape Doctor.

7. Flat sandals you can walk 5 km in, plus 1 pair of trainers

The Sea Point Promenade is flat and paved and most people walk it both ways. Clifton 4th is a flight of steps down from the road. Flat sandals do the day: Promenade, Regent Road, beach steps. Trainers do the Promenade run, Signal Hill at sunset and the market mornings. Leave the stilettos: the only Cape Town venue that wants them is a rooftop at night, and a block heel does that too.

8. Two swimsuits

One drying, one on. Cape Town's Atlantic water is cold, so most of your swimming is a dip: Saunders Rock tidal pool in Bantry Bay, Camps Bay tidal pool, the Sea Point Pavilion pool. A swimsuit under the Aura Dress is the uniform.

9. SPF 50 and a beach bag that fits a dress

Not a tote. A bag that takes a towel, a dress, a hat, a bottle and a book without sand getting into the dress. Reapply SPF 50 every 2 hours. Amaya's linen and cotton shade your shoulders, but they are not sunscreen.

10. One pair of pants or a long skirt

For the wine farm day, the windy afternoon, the flight home. Amaya makes a few pants and tops each season. See the full range for what is in stock in your size, or the knit skirt in the Byblos set.

Beach to dinner in 3 moves

This is the day the list is built for, so here is how the 10 items work together.

  1. 10:00 to 15:00, beach. Swimsuit, the Aura Dress over it, hat, sandals, SPF 50, the beach bag. The dress comes off at the towel and goes back on for the walk to the car.
  2. 15:00 to 18:00, wind and a wander. The same dress, sand shaken out, with the layer from item 5 if the Promenade is blowing. Or swap to the short set from item 2 if you are stopping at a market.
  3. 18:00 onwards, dinner or a rooftop. Shake out the Byblos set or the Camilla Dress, add the layer, change the sandals if you packed a second pair. No hotel stop needed, and no iron.

Amaya cuts for this sequence on purpose: a mini that goes over a swimsuit, a set that splits, a knit that does not crease.

What not to pack

  • Stilettos. Sand, lawn, cobbles and gravel all beat them.
  • A chiffon maxi with a slit. The south-easter will finish what the slit started.
  • More than 1 pair of jeans. You will wear them twice, both at night.
  • An umbrella. It rarely rains in December and January, and the wind would turn it inside out anyway.
  • A second suitcase. The 10 items above fit 1 cabin bag, and anything you forgot can reach your Cape Town hotel in 1 to 2 days.

Buy here instead of packing it

If you are flying in, order before you fly and Amaya delivers to your hotel or guesthouse. Pieces leave the studio in 1 to 2 working days. Delivery is R99 and free over R1 500. Cape Town takes 1 to 2 days, Johannesburg 2 to 3. The first exchange is free within 14 days. Sizes are S to L with some one-size styles, and the size guide has the measurements.

If you would rather try first, Amaya is at The Lot Collective, 77 Regent Road, Sea Point and 15 Vineyard Road, Claremont, and online at Toned, toned.co.za. For a question about a specific trip, WhatsApp Max on +27 83 703 8502.
